Sick Visits

Sick visits are medical appointments typically scheduled on the same or the next day to address new or worsening symptoms that require timely care. Although these symptoms may not be severe enough for emergency care, they can still impact your health and daily life.

These visits can allow us to catch and treat common health issues before they become more serious. Early intervention often helps prevent complications, shorten recovery time, and get you back to feeling your best.

At Internal Medicine & Primary Care of Sebastian (IMPCS), we offer sick visits for a wide range of acute, non-emergency concerns for patients of all ages.

During your appointment, our primary care provider, Dr. Edeck Pierre, will assess your symptoms, order any necessary tests, and create a customized treatment plan to help you feel better as quickly and safely as possible.

How Sick Visits Differ from Routine Care

Sick visits are problem-focused appointments meant to address sudden or short-term health concerns, such as a sore throat, cough, fever, or stomach upset. These visits are scheduled when you are not feeling well and need timely evaluation, but your symptoms do not require a trip to the emergency room.

This is different from a routine wellness check, which is preventive in nature. Routine check-up visits are typically scheduled in advance and focus on your long-term health. They include preventative screenings, lifestyle counseling, and the management of chronic conditions.

Sick visits, on the other hand, are about addressing what is wrong right now. The goal is to diagnose the issue quickly, relieve symptoms, and prevent complications.

At IMPCS, we take the time to understand your current symptoms in the context of your medical history. This personalized approach ensures faster, more accurate care that gets you feeling better sooner.

Common Conditions Treated During the Sick Visits

Here are some of the common health conditions we can address during a sick visit.

Respiratory Infections

Respiratory infections affect your nose, throat, sinuses, airways, or lungs. They can cause symptoms like nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, sneezing, body aches, low-grade fever, fatigue, or post-nasal drip.

Common respiratory infections we treat include:

  • Common cold
  • Influenza (flu)
  • Sinus infections (sinusitis)
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Sore throats, including strep and viral pharyngitis
  • COVID-19

During your visit, we will review your symptoms, listen to your lungs, check for fever, and perform a rapid flu or strep test if needed. Early treatment can help ease discomfort and reduce the risk of complications.

Fever & Chills

A fever is often your body’s natural response to infection. It can occur with conditions like cold, flu, strep throat, urinary tract infections, or pneumonia. During your visit, we evaluate how long the fever has lasted, check your vital signs, and determine whether further testing is needed.

Nausea, Vomiting, & Diarrhea

Sudden digestive issues can be exhausting, and if not treated, they can lead to dehydration, especially in young children or older adults. These symptoms are often caused by stomach viruses, food poisoning, or bacterial infections. We evaluate your symptoms, rule out serious causes, and provide medications, hydration tips, and diet recommendations to help you recover.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

UTIs are infections caused by bacteria in the urinary tract. They can affect the bladder, urethra, or even the kidneys. Symptoms may include a burning feeling when urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or lower abdominal pain.

If left untreated, the infection can spread to the kidneys. We provide onsite UTI testing and, if confirmed, prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection quickly.

Minor Injuries

Twisted ankles, pulled muscles, and minor cuts can be painful and disrupt daily activities. We can assess the extent of the injury, check for swelling or restricted movement, and recommend treatment like rest, ice, compression, wound care, or medications.

Skin Rashes & Infections

Sudden skin changes, such as red patches, itchy bumps, swelling, or warmth, can result from allergic reactions, infections, or dermatitis (skin inflammation). We carefully examine the affected area and recommend the appropriate course of treatment depending on the cause.

Headaches & Migraines

Headaches can stem from sinus pressure, stress, high blood pressure, dehydration, or neurological causes. We assess your symptoms, check your blood pressure, and discuss possible triggers. Depending on the cause, we may prescribe medication or suggest lifestyle changes to reduce recurrence.

What to Expect from Your Sick Visit Appointment

At Internal Medicine & Primary Care of Sebastian, we make every effort to ensure your sick visit is thorough, efficient, and focused on getting you back on track as quickly as possible.

Here is what you can expect during your appointment.

Check-In & Health History Review

Upon arrival, we will ask about your current symptoms, when they started, how severe they are, and how they have progressed. We also review recent illnesses and medication changes.

Focused Evaluation by Dr. Pierre

After the initial review, Dr. Edeck Pierre will listen carefully to your concerns and perform a targeted physical examination based on your symptoms. This may include checking your temperature, heart rate, breathing, throat, ears, abdomen, or affected areas.

Point-of-Care Testing When Appropriate

If further investigation is needed, we offer point-of-care testing for a variety of common conditions, allowing us to deliver quick, reliable results during your visit. This enables us to make informed decisions and begin treatment without delay.

Some of the rapid tests we provide include:

  • Rapid flu or strep tests
  • COVID-19 testing
  • Urinary tract infections (UTI) testing

These tests are performed directly in our office, providing immediate results so we can diagnose and treat your condition promptly.

If additional or advanced testing (such as imaging or lab work) is needed, we can provide a referral to a trusted facility and coordinate the next steps for you.

Individualized Treatment Plan

Once your condition is diagnosed, we will discuss your results and walk you through a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include prescription medication, home care instructions, or lifestyle change recommendations.

We understand that illness does not follow a schedule. That is why we offer flexible sick visit options, including same-day availability, after-hours access, and weekend appointments. Walk-ins are also welcome, or you can call ahead to find a time that works best for you.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms require a sick visit, you can give us a call. We can help you decide on the best next step for your care.
